The Regal

Aside from reputedly being the largest pub in Europe, the Regal is also the city’s Wetherspoon representative, and in that respect brings all the usual features – cheap, if unexceptional, beer; a wide variety of international bottled beers; cheap food with specialities in beer & burger for under £5, and curry & steak nights; dancefloor on Friday and Saturday nights; bouncers on the door requiring ID; a tasteful if generic interior with plenty of seating ranging from tables for 2/4 to larger spots for big groups. However, I have personally found the staff there to be chatty and helpful (not always a standard Spoons feature), and in common with its sister branches it does a beer festival for a couple of weeks mid-Michaelmas term, where beer can be purchased in pints, halves or thirds, at a uniform price of under £2/pint. A bargain, but there is an essence of getting what you pay for.
